A player dodging an attack.

Dodging is one of the core abilities of the player in Outward, allowing the player to avoid enemy attacks.

Overview

Dodging consumes 6 Stamina Stamina by default and causes the character to perform a diving roll towards their facing direction. When not wearing a backpack or when wearing a backpack which does not interfere with dodging, this will be a "fast roll" and has invincibility frames (commonly referred to as "i-frames"), meaning that your character cannot be hit by any attacks from enemies for part of the roll animation. These i-frames last for approximately 500ms (0.5 seconds, or 30 frames at 60FPS).

When wearing a backpack which interferes with dodging, the dodge animation will be considerably slower and does not have any invincibility frames. For this reason it is highly recommended to drop your backpack before most combat encounters if it interferes with your dodge.

While dodging can be an invaluable tool at one's disposal - especially for avoiding unavoidable blasts - many players find that side-stepping (running horizontally while locked on to a target) can be equally as useful in avoiding attacks from enemies.

As well as for avoiding attacks, dodging can also be a useful movement tool in general, allowing one to climb up and over steep slopes, since Outward does not have a jumping mechanic.

Affected by

Other than certain backpacks, dodging can be affected by:

  • Acrobatics The Three Brothers - increases the range of unhampered dodges, but increases dodge cost by 50%
  • Feather Dodge - reduces stamina cost of dodging by 50%, and completely removes dodge interference from all backpacks.
  • Alert The Soroboreans - increases invincibility window by 5% per Alert level
  • Hampered The Three Brothers - removes ability to dodge for a short duration
